How to Build Relationships Before Submitting a Grant Application


Building relationships with funders before submitting your grant application can be one of the most valuable steps in the grant writing process. When funders know your organization and your mission, they’re more likely to give your application the attention it deserves. In this post, I’ll share three key strategies to help you build those important relationships.

1. Research the Funder Thoroughly

Before you reach out to a potential funder, it’s critical to understand who they are and what they’re looking for. Research their mission, funding priorities, and the types of projects they typically support. This will help you align your project with their goals and show that you’ve done your homework. Visit their website, read their annual reports, and look at the organizations they’ve funded in the past. By tailoring your approach to fit the funder’s values, you demonstrate that you respect their mission and can be a valuable partner in achieving their goals.

2. Communicate Effectively

Once you’ve done your research, the next step is to establish communication. Start by introducing yourself and your organization. Whether you reach out via email, phone call, or at a networking event, it’s important to build rapport and create a relationship based on mutual respect. Ask insightful questions about their funding priorities or how your project might align with their goals. Keep the conversation ongoing and follow up with additional information or updates that might be relevant to their interests. The key is to make the communication feel natural and relationship-driven, not transactional.

3. Demonstrate Your Organization’s Value

Finally, it’s essential to show funders that your organization is credible and capable of delivering results. This can be done by sharing success stories, showcasing key metrics from past projects, or providing testimonials from beneficiaries. Funders want to invest in organizations that can make a tangible impact, so make sure you highlight how your organization has successfully executed similar projects in the past. Show them why you’re the right partner to help them achieve their mission and goals.

By implementing these three strategies, you’ll build relationships that help make your grant proposals stand out. Funders are more likely to support organizations they know and trust, so investing in these relationships early on is key to long-term success.
