How to Select a Target Population for Your Project or Program in a Grant Application

Choosing the right target population is essential for ensuring that your project meets the needs of the community and has a strong chance of receiving grant funding. In this post, I’ll share three key steps for selecting a target population that aligns with your project goals and resonates with funders.

Align Your Target Population with Your Project’s Goals

Start by ensuring that your target population aligns with the goals of your project. Who are you trying to help, and why? Funders want to see that your project addresses a clear need.

Use Data to Support Your Choice

Next, back up your choice with data. Use research, census data, or needs assessments to demonstrate that your target population is in need and how your project can meet that need.

Demonstrate Your Organization’s Capacity

Finally, show funders that your organization has the experience and resources to effectively reach and serve the population. Highlight any past successes or partnerships that strengthen your case.
